God called Mary to bear His Son — a task so monumental and “impossible” that there’s no way she could have followed through unless she had faith. She trusted God to do what He said, and to equip her with everything she’d need to fulfill His purpose for her. God calls us to that same kind of obedience — the kind that requires our dependence on Him — and when we rely on Him, our faith not only grows, but we become a living, breathing showcase to the amazing things that only He can do.

God literally worked out the impossible in order for Mary, a virgin, to conceive and give birth to His own Son. So why do we doubt that He can work out the seemingly “impossible” things in our own lives? When His Spirit lives within us and we walk in obedience, He fills us with the power to accomplish His plan and purpose.

Many of the Holocaust’s concentration camps were located near cities, and the people who lived in those cities turned a blind eye and did nothing as lives were lost, because they were afraid of the repercussions for speaking up. Today, millions of children continue to lose their lives to abortion, and we find ourselves turning a blind eye and doing nothing. But God calls us to fight for the lives of the innocent and the voiceless — and that includes the unborn.

Scripture’s filled with stories of ordinary people who stepped out in faith to God — no matter how crazy it seemed. As we mature in our relationship with Him, we cease to act childish and learn to obey Him in big ways and small. Sometimes He calls us to listen in ways we don’t necessarily understand. The question is: are we ready and willing to obey?

God takes obedience to Him seriously — but He also knows we can’t obey Him through our own effort. None of us can be perfectly like Christ, but we can let Him work as Himself in us and through us. He alone can provide us with the power and the strength to say “yes” to what He asks.

At some point in each of our lives, God gives us a calling. Yet so many of us choose to ignore it. We’re afraid that if we follow what He has planned for us, we’ll lose our lives in the process, instead of recognizing that we’ve already lost them when we miss out on what He has in store. The impact one life can have on the world when yielded to God is remarkable — all we have to do is answer the call.

Would you rather run the risk of you looking foolish to other people because you obeyed what God asked you to do, or of God looking foolish to the world because you disobeyed Him when you claim to follow Him? Prayer is important, but we have to be careful not to use prayer as procrastination and to respond with obedience the first time we hear His voice.

God’s plan for His people has been in place since before time began, and He wants to use US to accomplish it! Living by faith means trusting that God will work through us to bring His plan to completion. It’s up to us to finish the work He began in us — and even if we quit in the past, we always have an opportunity to pick up, start over, and finish strong.

Jesus left His disciples with the Great Commission — the instruction to spread the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. But that command didn’t stop there! It was passed to every generation of believers to come, including each of us alive today. Sometimes it can seem impossible, but with God, all things are possible…if only we’re obedient to His call.

As Christians, not only does Jesus live within us — His power lives within us, too! When God calls us to perform simple acts of obedience in His name, we don’t do it alone, but with the power of the Holy Spirit inside us. We have the choice to obey and act as “lifeboats” for other people, or we can disobey knowing our actions impact not only ourselves, but those around us, too.

Jonah’s story of running from God is an illustration to us about the effects of our disobedience, not only on our own lives, but on the people around us. Our actions always have an impact on other people, for better or for worse. And when God calls us to do something, it’s our job to obey Him not only so our obedience is rewarded, but so other people can reap the rewards of our obedience, too.

We may not always see the result of God’s work until we get to heaven. That doesn’t lessen our responsibility to obey when He directs us to pray and to act! The Holy Spirit is in all those who believe and trust in the Lord, and as we walk in the Spirit, we need to be ready to respond when we’re prompted.
